OUGD404 - Design Principles - Layout design

Layout Design Session 1

Grids and Devine proportions

The fibonacci sequence is a proportional tool (not a measurement tool) and is a sequenced observed in lots of forms of nature. It is a sequence derived from the sum of the 2 preceding numbers in the number line. It has the ratio of 8:13.

The Fibonacci sequence in Nature by Numbers:

The Golden Section is derived from the forms of seashells proportionally decreasing in size. 1.62 is the golden number.

Paper sizes are created using the golden section/ Fibonacci sequence:

We can also apply the Fibonacci sequence to typographic and editorial layouts. For example, a 55 point title should be complimented with a 34 point bodycopy.

The rule of thirds

More often than not in art and design, there will be a recognised grid, calculated by thirds of the page which are considered to be the main natural focal points that our eyes are attracted to. For example:

Editorial layout design

From observing hierarchy through size and the use of columns in layout designs, we can rearrange and create our own editorial designs:

Task:

create your own paper size using the Fibonacci sequence and Golden Section.

Here are the proportions of my calculated paper sizes:

  • 4cm x 6cm
  • 6cm x 8cm
  • 8cm x 12cm
  • 12cm x 18cm
  • 18cm x 20cm
